Fabian Delph has revealed the Manchester City team-mate who he believes is the best athlete he has played alongside – the talented Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho.
Delph has highlighted his own drive and hard work from a young age as one of the key factors behind his own progression from Bradford schoolboy to England international.
But since joining Manchester City, he believes he is seeing a level of work and professionalism that has helped them become ‘one of the best teams in the world’.
“Playing at City now there are some world class players,” says Delph.
“When I first joined the club I found that pretty much everybody was in the gym doing prehab before training, getting their nutrition right, and recovering well.
“That is why the team I am at now is one of the best teams in the world.
“And Fernandinho is probably the best athlete I have played with so far.
“He is obviously a great player and very talented.
“But without the hard work, dedication and commitment, none of that matters.
“He covers a ridiculous amount of mileage in a game, always pressing, and he is a clever player as well.
“His all-round game is right up there with the best of anyone.”
In this video interview with #talentaintenough, Delph talks of how he always knew he had to be a footballer, reveals how his Mum was his driving force, and how he honed his competitive streak from an early age.
“I used to get two buses and a train to get to football – I’d get home at midnight and then go to school the next day,” adds the midfielder.
“I was really driven and I always had good people around me and my Mum was really important in pushing me on.”
